Try Something Else by linawifeofL Try Something Else by linawifeofL
Seriously, this has gotten SO. BORING. I feel like I can't click on a deviation involving a female OC without it involving something about her depressing life of sexual abuse by her father/uncle/brother/pony, forced marriage, sexual slavery, etc. etc. You name it, I've seen it in the last twenty minutes.

I don't like this shtick for numerous reasons. One is that it's of course making light of a very serious, painful situation just to get a character moar atenshuns. But mostly it's from a character appreciator's point of view. The "sexual abuse" route is just lazy. It's a cheap way to get sympathy for a character, like making them an orphan. Of COURSE people will feel sympathetic towards such a character because something like prolonged sexual abuse is something any reasonable person will recognise as bad. It's like putting an asylum in a horror movie or scantily clad busty women in a dude film: it's a guaranteed way to get the reaction being sought without putting in any actual effort.

Don't get me wrong, the sexual abuse route can make for some very interesting stories if written with talent and devotion to the plot and character development, but most of the time all I see happening is "I want my character to get lots of sympathy and attention. How can I do this? Hmmmm OH I KNOW! AN ASSHOLE MALE! ABUSING HER SEXUALLY! *adds in* Oh Lifetime, you have taught me well. Now to make her hot and have her cry every two seconds, okay, character development doesn't need to go any further from there".

Well, what if that female character is a well-developed, strong, realistic character? Does it matter so much then?

When you think about it, everything you will write is somewhat cliché, it has been used 100 times before and its not completely original.
I mean look at Disney, they make tons of money from clichés.
So pretty much placing the whore arranged marriage and sexual abuse is kind of cliché, but you can always tweak it a bit, change sides, not make it sexual abuse, make it a wrong choice of marriage etc.
There is always a way to tweak a cliché to a point where it will be somewhat original. However generalizing everything of the sort as cliché and boring is in fact cliché.

Well, I almost went down the 'apathetic arranged marriage' route, then realized that was stupid...

So I made her fiance a gentleman who treated her well, but realized that she didn't treat him well in return... So I changed it up and decided to have the two characters find love with one another in the end~ ^^

Kinda like in 'Fiddler on the Roof.'

You know what else is painfully overdone? Breathing. I mean, come on! I see people do it every. Freakin'. Day. It's getting old, dammit, and I just won't stand for it any longer!

Down with breathing! Down with breathing!

...or is tired of people labeling common facets of storytelling as "cliche" or "schtick" simply because a handful of people happen to be tired of it?

...Yeah, I'm actually not sure, myself. I AM drunk at the moment, and I DID make the comment over 6 months ago, so...at this point, it's anyone's guess!
