There seems to be this myth going around that to tolerate something or someone, you have to like them. If you don't agree with someone, suck it up and be friends, and if you don't, you're an argumentative asshole.
THAT IS NOT WHAT TOLERANCE MEANS.
The dictionary definition of "tolerance" is: 1. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry. 2. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own. 3. interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint. 4. the act or capacity of enduring; endurance
Key words being "fair", "objective", "permissive", and "enduring".
TO BE TOLERANT IS TO FAIRLY ACCEPT DIFFERENCES, NOT TO LIKE THEM.
Tolerance is all about agreeing to disagree. You don't have to force yourself to like something that you don't agree with, and that should be liberating to you! As long as you treat the person, opinion or situation you do not agree with with respect and an objective eye, you are tolerant.
Yeah! Seriously, I tolerate a lot of people, many of whom I honestly want to punch in the face. In life, you have to tolerate an asshole boss, an assigned seat next to a douchebag, a teacher who wants you to fail, and homework. No one in their right mind is asking you to like/love any of them.
True. No you see when people twist around tolerance to mean the other incorrect lay definition it isn't it's just another one of those manipulation techniques to force people to agree.
Exactly. ;] But try to say it loud and then you'll become an idiot and ignorant. Espacially when you're the only one between interlocutors (? xD) who know what dictionary is.
